DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL STUDIES AI POLICY
In all academic work in the department, students are expected to act in line with the values of academic integrity and strictly avoid forms of breaching academic integrity (also referred to as “academic misconduct” or “academic dishonesty”) such as plagiarism, recycling or resubmitting work, fabricating information, collusion, exam cheating, contract cheating, impersonation, and unapproved use of digital technologies including AI.
The AI policy that applies to all types of work in classes, assignments, and theses is as follows:
Prohibited AI Use
● AI tools cannot be listed as one of the authors in an academic study.
● Do not use AI tools for automated bulk extensive copyediting and translation tasks in your assignments.
● Do not rely too heavily on AI tools in your work.
● Taking sentences from a text generated by an AI tool and presenting them as your own work is plagiarism and will be considered as plagiarism.
● Using generative AI to generate a list of counterarguments to a thesis and then claiming them as your own also counts as plagiarism.
Materials to Be Stored and Released in the Event of a Review
● When AI tools are used in an academic study, the original drafts, prompts and outputs must be stored to be presented upon request.
● Drafts. All drafting, editing, and revision processes must be conducted within digital platforms that maintain an unalterable version history (e.g., Microsoft Word Track Changes, or Google Docs). In the event of an academic integrity review or reasonable suspicion regarding automated text generation, the student is required to provide the digital version history demonstrating the chronological development of the manuscript.
● Sources and data. Electronic or printed data sources and quantitative or qualitative data produced by the student must be stored and provided in the event of any review of the student’s work.
AI Disclosure in Final Output
● When AI tools are used in any form in academic work, the purpose and manner of use (such as AI use in conducting literature review, theoretical or empirical research, data collection, data analysis, data presentation, etc., or getting writing assistance in language, grammar and structure) must be clearly disclosed in an appropriate section of the work (such as the introduction, literature review, methodology, acknowledgments, etc.) and a citation to the AI tool must be provided where it is used.
Enforcement and Penalization
● Any text generated by AI used in assignments without proper attribution and any additional improper use of AI will be penalized.
Responsibility
● Authors bear full responsibility for the use of AI in their works.
● Authors bear full responsibility for any violations of academic integrity that may result from the inappropriate use of AI.
